From an early age Marchi showed a special interest for music. When he was sixteen he played as a guitarist in a local band that performed frequently in public from 1966 to 1972.

In the same period he also began studying the classical guitar. Owing to his growing desire to make an instrument, he moved to Cremona in 1974 where he began attending the Violinmaking School of Cremona and graduated in 1978 under the guidance of master GioBatta Morassi.

In 1979 he opened his own workshop and during the same year he was invited to teach violinmaking at the Violinmaking School.

From 1978 to 1982 he worked alongside Walter Leoni as his assistant in the night classes of classical guitar construction held by the regional administration which enabled him to specialize in this instrument.

He makes and repairs violins, violas and violoncellos, as well as baroque, transitional and classical guitars, and the occasional viola da gamba, lute, mandolin and ghironda.

In 1980 he was a founding member of the ALI Association (Italian violinmaking Association). In the professional makers section of the ALI Association he was a councilor and after this he was the secretary from 1996 to 1998, and president in 1999.

He is a member of the AEL Association (European Association of Master Violin and Bow Makers) and of the Entente (International Union of Master Violin and Bow Makers).

He has received awards and honorable mentions in various violinmaking competitions. He still teaches at the International Violinmaking School of Cremona. His workshop is situated on Via Beltrami n° 8, Cremona, just a short distance from the cathedral.
