CARON. Versailles, 1775-85. Maker to the Queen; not remarkable.
Worked at Versailles 1770-1790.Held the appointment of lute maker to Marie Antoinette.
Model of violins somewhat follows that of an Amati, differing mostly in being of greater breath, invariably of neat workmanship-rather scarce.Orange-yellow or brown vanish usually of fairly soft apperance, but a few specimens are less maple.Tone of excellent quality and satisfyingly responsive.
Violaas mostly varnished in dark brown.
Ten-stringed theorbo, with initials of Marie Antoinette fancifully inlaid, preserved in the Paris Conservatoire Collection.
