Jean-François Daber
The company was founded by Jean Schmitt in 1981. It is now headed by Vincent Tricou and Gilles Saurais. Vincent and Gilles aim to help the world’s finest performers – violinists, violists and cellists – to express their deepest artistic feelings and also to get the best out of their instruments.
The company benefits from the skills of a team of highly-experienced bow makers and craftsmen.
Vincent Tricou, one of France’s finest bow makers, started his career with Daber in 1981 and headed the company’s team of craftsmen for 18 years. He then opened his own shop and went on producing bows for artists. He is now back with Daber.
Vincent Tricou sees to it that production and quality meet the most demanding standards for traditional French bow making. He is an excellent string-player and tries out each and every bow, fine-tuning them to make sure that they are capable of meeting the needs of performers. In the case of bows to be used by soloists, he pays particular attention to their acoustic properties and the way in which they combine with fine instruments.

Gilles Saurais, in his capacity as Executive Manager, is in charge of the company’s customer relationships and helps violin makers to promote Daber bows. Alongside these master craftsmen, Gilles meets performers who are anxious to acquire tailor-made bows.

Gilles is also in charge of relationships with all the suppliers of raw materials, making sure that the company uses only the very best that is on offer. He is particularly demanding in his selection of wood, thus guaranteeing that the company’s craftsmen work with material that meets Daber’s requirements with regard to tone and dynamics.
