Born 1864. Pupil of Antoniazzi. Established at Milan, 1890. Occupied the second floor of a beautiful old palace with large and lofty rooms – choice examples of antique instruments in one room, specimens of his own work in another, and a restoration room occupied by his three sons – Andrea (born 1890), Giacomo (1900), and Leandro Jnr. (1904).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Became the most esteemed Italian maker of his time. Died 1946.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Made many perfect replicas of old instruments, also many of new appearance <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(measurements generally based on those of the Messie Strad). Varnished from a long-lost Strad recipe dated 1704 which came into his possession, and subsequently caused much controversy among connoisseurs as to its authenticity. Lovely textured and lustrously transparent of orange-red shade, irresistibly urging the onlooker to immediately draw the bow across the strings, and finds viola-like sonority on the \u2018G\u2019 and \u2018D\u2019 with brilliant clarity on the \u2018A\u2019 and \u2018E\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several specimens realised \uffe140 in 1924. Today \uffe180 to \uffe1100 and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leandro Bisiach was a talented craftsman and an astute businessman, and his shop was foremost in his country during his lifetime. After studying with Riccardo Antoniazzi in Milan in 1886, he established his business around 1890, where he employed numerous makers, including his teacher and Antoniazzi’s father Gaetano and brother Romeo, and traded in antique Italian instruments. Gaetano Sgarabotto, Giuseppe Ornati, Ferdinando Garimberti, and Iginio Sderci all worked there for extended periods. Although many instruments bearing Bisiach’s label can be attributed at least in part by other makers in the shop, his personal work is of a high quality, showing a fine understanding of his classical predecessors. Toward the end of his career the style becomes more heavy and less inspired; consequently, instruments before 1914 are especially sought after. His four sons, Andrea, Carlo, Giacomo, and Leandro assisted him in the workshop for many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
